I now have three strobes and associated stands and softboxes I’ve been messing about with them quite a bit. Viveca asked me to take some pictures of her and Jasper the cat. He’s pretty old so Viveca wanted to get some decent pics of him and her together.
This was actually quite a challenge, The basic set-up was fairly straight forward, however getting a decent amount of light into the camera was another thing. I’ve used my 85mm F1.8 here on F1.8 at ISO 200. the strobes left and right were on full power with overhead providing quarter power fill light. As it was dark / evening in my flat there wasn’t very much ambient light at all, meaning that I had to open up the aperture fully. This then presented the issue of capturing a decent depth of field. I must have taken about 50 shots, most of them with either Viveca super sharp, or Jasper super sharp, very few with both spot on. It’s a learning curve and I know what I need to do next time. On the plus side it was a pleasure to take some pics of my lovely girlfriend and not shoot selfies, meaning that I could direct her a little and not have to go back and forth to check the image after each shot.
Interestingly I was also under strict command not to ‘grunge it up’, therefore the processing is much smoother and softer. I’m really happy with the results.
