I was lucky enough to be asked to shoot some of the local MMA athletes recently.  Its the first time that I have been able to practice a three light technique on people other than myself or close friends, so was somewhat apprehensive and excited about doing it especially given that they are all pretty tough. Despite the hard work that was going on – kicking punching and grappling every one of the fighters was superb (not sure why I would think them any different really).

I managed to set-up pretty quickly and with the help of one of the guys get the lighting just how I wanted it. The guys and girls were training so I knew that I wouldn’t have very long to shoot each of them, about a minute each between sessions. It was a pretty quick-fire set of images. Overall I’m very happy with the outcome, but know I can do better, there are a few things that I would change if asked to do this again. I’m definitely going to get a white / black screen for this sort of work and may use just a single softbox rather than the three that I used for this set.

I really enjoyed shooting the NWA team and would love to do something similar again, so if there are any other London clubs that would like portraits shot drop me a line!

This is the first part of a possible three part set, other fighters to come.
